Xerxes de Oliveira is a dance music artist from Brazil. Also known as XRS, his tracks has been extending Brazilian music boundaries with a delicious blend of tribal percussive sounds and sweet bossa nova arrangements. In 2008, he started his new label, Tupy, covering genres that range from breakbeat to house and lounge.
His debut as a music producer was in 1993, when he won a contest with the track "Power 2 the People", a breakbeat hardcore remix produced from tiny magnetic tape samples cut by hand and spliced together. This earned him a residence in a club called Aeroanta, from 1993 to 1995, in São Paulo.
In 1996, he started the project XRS Land and released the EP "From the Land to the City". This project culminated in the album Sarau (released by Trama / Sambaloco in 1999), The Brazil EP (released by V Recordings in 2001), and the track LK (a remix of Toquinho and Jorge Ben Jor Brazilian classic "Carolina Carol Bela") figuring at the 17th position on the UK Top 40 BBC Radio 1's singles Chart Show in 2002.
XRS has played in almost every continent, in festivals such as PercPan (Brazil), Sónar (Spain) and EXIT (Serbia), and clubs like The End (UK), The Womb (Japan), D-Edge (Brazil), Watergate (Germany), and Roxy (Czech Republic).
His musical partners include acclaimed artists across many styles, such as Cleveland Watkiss, DJ Marky, Fernanda Porto, Gilberto Gil, Jenna G, Marcus Intalex, ST Files and Vikter Duplaix. As a remixer, he recreated tracks from big names in Brazil and abroad, such as Bebel Gilberto, Dave Angel, Everything But The Girl, Jorge Ben, Roy Ayers, and US3.
During the next Spring and Summer XRS Land will celebrate 15 years of cutting edge music showcasing the latest tracks released on his own imprint, Tupy (which completes in April 3 years of good quality releases), his own productions and remixes. Stay tuned!
